Maemo 2.0 & OS2006 beta for developers is out !
When we released the first version of our software some 7 months ago, we knew that we need to fix things and add new features. We've done that and we are now ironing out nasty bugs and stabilizing the software. As you know, our new software introduces Google talk and other goodies. Just a bit of polishing and .... you can go and update your own 770 with this new 2006 software edition.
When we started to design the OS2006, we worried about backwards compatibility. We knew that we'll have challenges:
1) After the first version of any major system, you need to introduce upgrades and fixes. You need to change things, and you cannot ensure compatibility between your software releases (When can we? It is still a question!)
2) We have a very tight development schedule. I knew that we'd struggle in providing a beta early enough for developers for them to port their work on the new software version.
But here we go! We just released a beta version (the OS2006) of the new Internet Tablet software, and maemo 2.0 -- tools needed for application development at maemo. The purpose of this beta is to give tools for the developers to get their apps & stuff ported on the new software.
The beta is beta! It has its problems but I believe it is very usable for this purpose. It is not intended for regular consumers but for developers. So be careful out there. It may bite!

Where can people (non-Maemo developers) leave feedback on the beta?
My 770 lies idle due to the lack of a good PDF reader. I was really hoping this would get better with v2.0. It seems a bit faster but otherwise still has weaknesses, including one fundamental flaw - the zoom in/out buttons should skip pages instead. Page turning is the common use case; not zooming.
Other major improvement would be a zoom to fit that skips left/right margins and uses the full width of the display, portrait mode support, and (if only) a 'flow mode' like the Adobe Reader on Pocket PC, which reformats paragraphs to fit the display width independent of the zoom level.
I love the thumb keyboard. Well done.
I was hoping for the possibility to "add a folder" in the Audio Player. At the moment the only solution seems to add MP3 files 1 by 1, manually.
I haven't heard any bad comments yet. It looks like you guys are doing a great job.
Any news on the new hardware that Nokia were talking about?

How can I recover my 770? After flashing (according to instructions on maemo.org that I can no longer find), my 770 won't get past the screen where it says the kernel version (2.6.12.3-omap1). I can't use flasher or flasher-2.0 to go back; no matter what I do, the device boots to that screen, displays that kernel version (built on dec 14, 2005), and freezes. Flashing old images onto the device does not change the kernel version. Can you help me?
YEAH,THE NEW VERSION 2.0 BETA IS GOOD,BUT THE ONLY THING MISSING IS YAHOO AND MSN CHAT,MOST PEOPLE DONT KNOW ABOUT GOOGLE TALK.I THINK GAIM SHOULD BUILD THE GAIM MESSAGER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FOR 2.0 BETA.
Since the chat client can use both Google Talk and Jabber, you should have access to the others too if you use a Jabber server with gateways towards ICQ, MSN etc. They do exist.
It's a nice upgrade. I tried it on my new 770, thought it was nice and all, and then downgraded immediately to the latest 2005 release so I could run non-maemoed ;) debian ARM compiled software on it. Very geeky and very nice. Of course, hardly the public Nokia is aiming for with the 770, but us OSS linux geeks do love it. :)
