A high level roadmap
People are asking for roadmaps for internet tablets and our software. Hey ... these are all trade secrets ;-) Seriously, I do not want to go and comment all "are you gonna have xyz and when?" -questions, for they are so many, and often even we do not know the answer yet. But let me try to paint a picture - illustrate some of our thinking. So here we go:
Short term
In a few weeks (I hope) we'll release a new version of the OS2007 with a
-better Flash performance
-better video performance and quality
-longer usage times i.e. better power management
-fixes here and there
These are still in the owen so wait and see.
Mid term
Then later this year we 'll have an
-updated browser with better WEB 2.0 support and other goodies
-improved multimedia support with more formats supported
-improved package management to better enable sw upgrading
-interesting 3rd party software such as Skype and Real Rhapsody
-more apps & stuff downloadable from http://tableteer.nokia.com/ (can be accessed with an internet tablet, only ....)
We want to also strenghten our open source community approach. We need to better articulate, how developers can participate in the development of these devices. Today it happens primarilly in upstream projects, and that will always be the most important way for collaboration. So see you @ GUAGEC, FOSDEM, DEBCONF etc and @ sourceforge etc. In addition, we will improve the usage of our external bugzilla, and study how to push Sardine forward. Also, www.maemo.org will be constantly improved with the help of the developer community.
Long term
Now this gets more difficult. But we'll work on new software to improve your internet experience. And we'll get WiMAX. And ...

Ari - short term looks good, hopefully it will resolve many of the more glaring issues. Mid term looks even better! :)
Three questions which I hope you don't mind:
1. Is there an ETA for the Nokia N800 case - I'm really concerned about carrying my N800 around, I could be quite rough with the 770 but fear the N800 won't survive without some form of protection and I'm hoping the Nokia N800 case will provide sufficient protection without adding significant size/weight
2. What are your thoughts on Minimo for the Internet Tablet platform? The Mozilla Foundation seem to be winding down Minimo development and I know Nokia had some financial involvement with Minimo (in 2004) - do you see any future for Minimo on Nokia devices, or will you continue with Opera indefinitely? What about using the Symbian S60 browser - keep it closed source but at least under Nokia control, this may be a suitable compromise rather than continue with Opera and all it's problems.
3. What chance of USB-on-the-go support appearing in a future N800 firmware update?

Ari, why http://tableteer.nokia.com/ can be accessed with an internet tablet only? What's the rationale behind it? Wouldn't it be good for potential N800 buyers to see exacly what http://tableteer.nokia.com/ has to offer?
And if you access http://tableteer.nokia.com from a PC you are redirected to the Nokia 770 page - if Nokia are going to redirect the user, shouldn't they be redirected to the latest/greatest Internet Tablet device? :)
Ari - would it be possible to put together a short & mid-term roadmap for 770/OS2006 (possibly even OS2007/770 Hacker Edition etc. etc.)? My guess is a long-term roadmap for the 770 will be superfluous to requirements. :)
Ari - please see if you can get full SDHC support into the next N800 firmware release.
Philip Langdale - one of the SD/MMC Linux Kernel developers - has posted an updated N800 kernel with SDHC and improved MMC support on his blog here.

Does "WiMax" mean Sprint-subsidized/locked internet tablets with cellphone-like contracts? If not, WiMax does sound like it might be good news.
So the real question is... how long before N800 joins 770 in forced software obsolescence? 1 year? Less?
(Any news for 770 owners?! The "Hacker Edition" was just injury+=insult.)

Having just purchased the N800 I'm no power user. I've found it to just about answer every need I have for web communications, note taking and recording. However, one thing I miss is an easy sync to my Windows desktop Outlook calendar. Any chance of adding it? Thanks!

Hopefully Skype will use the existing call/chat UIs instead of another user interface on top of that. A small tablet like this should only have a single user interface for each functionality...
But anyway, the plans sound very promising!
What about greater geo-awareness in apps with GeoClue?

Could "better video performance and quality" mean h.264 or are there hardware limitations?
I really, really need OpenVPN integrated into the network applet (so it could be configured per connection like today's proxy configuration). Having to use such extensions as command like tools is a terrible hassle, to say the least. In fact, as someone suggested on the maemo-developers list, there should be a proper API for closed stuff like the networking/applets, so that developers could add things like this without all of us having to wait, hope, pray and beg Nokia to do it all.

That's a very exciting roadmap for a new n800 owner. Thanks! I'm curious as to whether "better Flash performance" implies work specifically on Flash video from sites like YouTube and Google Video. Flash in all other contexts seems fine to me, but is unusable for video, as everyone knows. Have pocket-sized access to YouTube would be incredible. Thanks again for doing all this work and being so (relative to the norm for big consumer electronics folks) open about it!
YouTube actually works mostly OK on both 770 and N800 if you download the .flv file and play it with mplayer... no conversion needed! It isn't perfect, but much better than the in-browser player. But, Opera 8.5 on N800 broke bookmarklet (bookmarks with javascript: urls) support so extracting the URLs to the .flv files requires another technique (there are websites that do it, or you can run a local python script).
Or, if you want smooth youtube .avi files in the builtin media player, bleb.org's vidconvert works well but takes time.
Funny that mplayer plays FLV better than Adobe and Nokia's bundled flash... Maybe 'cause flash just sucks?
Ari - thanks for this. It makes me a lot more comfortable about buying an N800. As a (soon to be) N800 owner, I agree with the people asking for a stronger case and for more USB support. Many digital cameras don't use SD cards and I really would like to get pictures out of these & up on the web without having to drag a laptop around.

Google Talk and Nokia's special Voice connection have ONE BIG PROBLEM...no one wants to use them....they are all on SKYPE!
I can't talk to my two brothers on Google Talk because...for a year...they do not support calling more than one person at a time.
And they refuse to download yet another special communications software....
But everyone is on Skype....
I have both the 770 and 800 and PLEASE PLEASE do not delay Skype...it will make the utility of these WONDERFUL Nokia units soar!!

About the 770-vs-N800 issue, from a 770 user since Dec. 2005 who has not upgraded :
Licensing issues I understand. I'm not clamoring for a new Opera and/or a new Flash plugin on the 770 if it's something Nokia reckons it can't afford. The subset of sites I routinely use on the tablet are mostly text-based content, and they work just as well as they did a year ago.
Hardware issues I understand. If OS2007 on the N800 takes advantage of more memory, more CPU, and various custom accelerator chips (which it doesn't actually seem to, yet), then that can't be backported, period. These are not the things that make me grumpy.
What galls me most is seeing Nokia and the maemo team jump ship and refocus their effort on a new, rushed-to-market and bug-ridden 2007 platform, leaving 2006 in maintenance mode with some glaring bugs of its own, some of which are known since its very release and will likely never get fixed.
Yes, there was a new release very recently. I installed it last Sunday, having skipped the one before. I left it mostly pristine just to see what would happen... And sure enough, right away it started rebooting itself while idle at least once per 24 hours, just like it's always done. Sheesh, a Linux system that restarts itself at will every day ? My Zaurus NEVER did that, and neither did any of my Psions. You'd think it would be considered a priority, but if you read the developers list they almost make it sound like it's "by design"... and of course the N800 does it, too. So there.
Then there are other things like the brain-dead App manager with its impossible interface, brittle update process, and the Red Pill nonsense. Opera closing all windows when you only ask it to close the current one (the "poof" effect), or deciding it doesn't want to follow any links anymore, or sometimes just the "submit" button on forms... And so on.
Another sore point is all the small or not-so-small "usability" improvements that have appeared on the N800, or rather OS2007, which are not tied to hardware or licensing issues. These are probably not fundamental changes deep down, but can make a huge difference in day-to-day use. The new behaviour of the "Home" button is one example ; official support of Bluetooth keyboards is another. Or the new look of the virtual keyboards, or the improved home applets management, or other such details... There doesn't seem to be any convincing reason why these couldn't benefit the 2006 platform, too.
I'd be quite content if Nokia would fix the 770's most obnoxious and long-standing bugs, and grant it some of the eye-candy and usability goodies the N800 has, and leave it at that. But somehow I don't think that is going to happen, and that leads me to wait and see what's going to happen with the N880, too...
Hey Ari, why didn't you use the N800's camera? It would have been one less step.
Any chance of video out? Nothin' fancy, just something simple like 640x480 at 30fps over standard RCA cables, this would put this device over the top for me.
Here's to hoping that any WiMax support will be not locked to a single provider. I'd be interested in using it with the Clearwire service being offered in the Seattle area, among other places:

Is there the possibility of a Bluetooth PAN profile or a more compatible DUN in the next system update? There are a lot of Windows Mobile users who can't use DUN on certain models and there is going to be a ton more that won't have a DUN profile because it has been dropped in favor of PAN in WM6.
My HTC Tornado's DUN profile works fine but I've replaced it with a HTC Wizard and the DUN profile is broken (or seems to be, at least). WM6 completely strips DUN in favor of PAN as well.

Please, be a big boy and make some statement about future 770 support and updates. Telling us that the 770 will continued to be supported makes us happy and dedicated to the device, telling us that the 770 will be stabalized is a good sales opportunity for Nokia having more and more people going from the 770 to the n800. I think it's a win-win (well, sort of).
Also can you shine a light on how long we, upgraders from the 770 to the n800, will enjoy our n800 before that one gets stabelized? Will that be next year when the n900 comes out with OS2008 which will be even more buggy and naturally incompatible with either OS2006 or OS2007 or the 770 and n800?
Can you provide us a, what i consider, mid-term roadmap for the Nokia Internet Tablet productline?

The N800 is impossible to buy online because of credit card verification hassles and it is not in stores in Eurocountries like France. Opera crashes when submitting text on the Watergate newspaper website because Javascript sucks but some web sites use it, unfortunately. A Minimo or Firefox or Netfront browser or stable Opera is needed. The mail client should support multiple inboxes. Forget the bells and whistles and video and Flash and Skype bling. Just get the basics working stably. Or sell an extended battery and let us run full-fledged Ubuntu.
Is it possible to allow scrolling up to get to the bottom of a menu? That seems like a no-brainer to me.
Also, a network mapping applet would be fantastic. I'm surprised nobody has done something about that yet. I can do it from the command line but it's very inelegant.

WHY CAN'T I TAKE A PICTURE? I loved your picture...but how come we cannot take pictures with our camera??? Shouldn't there be camera software with every computer that has a camera? There isn't even any third party software. The camera can't be used except for webcam...and we don't have SKYPE.
WE NEED SKYPE...GoogleTalk and Nokia's talk setup are not used by 99% of the people with whom I communicate. They ALL use SKYPE. Please.
OPEN THE n800 SOFTWARE LINKS TO DEVELOPERS. The Canola player is wonderful and makes the n800 MUCH more desirable BUT it cannot access our Internet Radio Library. In order to play Internet Radio on Canola on the n800 we must laboriously type in feed URL's and in many cases, that is impossible...as in the wonderful music feeds of live365.com. The Canola Developer tells me that he cannot access the Internet Radio Library.
Nokia should consider buying out a fine player software like Canola. It operates with fingertips and looks and operates beautifully...
Finally....I have both 770 and 800. The 800 battery dies every day...and never lasts even 24 hours with zero use. If I don't plug it in every night...it is a beautiful paperweight. The 770 stays operable for days and days.

i have been using GIZMO with no problems... calling australia to usa w/ no delays/dropouts.. so skype in NOT needed...
but what is needed is-- make

the included nokia videochat doesn't work on macs (only PC)... and nobody i know wants to use a single app... when they are all videochatting on aim/googletalk already...
can you just make the video plugin work for GAIM? or port a linux videochat program to the nokia?
everybody LAUGHS at me... a videocam that doesn't do videochat! or take pictures! its like a lame arm hanging off my body... its there, but doesn't work!

What about an emergency fix for all the N800 buyers whose machines somehow have gotten into the dreaded 3 second boot and die mode??? I haven't even had the chance to load software on the N800s I've had, yet they brick on their own. I've reflashed them both to no avail. I'm on N800 #3 (bought from different resellers). As an end user, the reason why Palm,and Windows Mobile are succeeding is that if there is a software glitch, you can always reset the device. Not so on the N800. Reflashing the machine SHOULD have reset it, or at least make the device useable.
You've got great potential here, but without core stability, Microsoft with their upcoming Crossbow, and Apple with their upcoming mobile platform will crush this. :(

Any specifics on what Nokia will issue regarding the N800's power management issues. Mine is brand new and with full charge it does not make it through the night....and I don't even use it. When in use it will last 2-3 hours....but it's as if standby mode uses as much power as regular use. What's going on? And what will be done to fix it?
Definetely need to have the PDF reader rotate pages. And has anyone notices that you can't change pages when PDF is in full screen??? You need to go back to minimized version, change page, and put back on full screen. Ridiculous...honestly some of the software on the N800 feels very very rushed....

You can so change pages with the PDF viewer in full screen mode. The 5 way buttons do it. I just went through a PDF that way.

Just thinking here, but all that really needs to be done for the case for the N800 is some sort of impact-resistant plastic shell that clips to the front.
Apart from the rigours of the moulding, I wouldn't expect it to cost much. 'course a high-value alternative for the ececutive gentleman would also sell to gadgeteers..! Especially if it were watertight.
For me, like the unit, like the approach (bora is a PITA to get going and what's with copying my host's /dev structure! Maybe a VMPlayer image would work better...).
Like to see:
Root access available with caveats about system restore.
smb/nfs over wireless/BT (unless I had root, maybe...).
standard battery pack (AAx4 or 6) so that if I don't have access to a wall-wart, I can load up on a 12-pack of AA batteries and keep going.
Thinking here again (do that sometimes!) I wonder if you could open up the N770 so that those who can/want can install a cross-compiled DSL/Puppy/Debian system and have an ongoing hardware system.
Maybe when support is dropped for the hardware in the future..? It shouldn't hit sales too bad because someone will probably buy the newer model before potentially nuking the old one.
It may require coding a GPL shim for the propriatory driver and a license, but a few quid may cover it if most of the N770 owners take it on.
PS I've had Opera bomb a few times and once the OS rebooted durring reboot. Only mentioning because if you don't know the extent of these issues, you can't assess the work needed.

I just got a data plan on my mobile. I pretty much do not need my computer anymore since I do so much with my mobile phone. The neatest thing is that I can even watch naughty movies:) It is pretty neat, it's called Mobile TV. All I do is point my phone to sexoncell.com and they have adult mobile movies in different formats like 3gp movies, symbian, pda or whatever. If you have any other cool sites, please let me know! This one, though, even has a free daily mobile movie.
Something that's not clear to me and could be easier is functionality - that would enable me to plug my n800 into my desktop at work and - have it use share the desktop's connection. Other changes - if powered be able not to dim or turn off, and be powered off the usb cable - I understand that may need to be a later model. I'm hoping to use it as my always connected device via google apps (which sort of works at the moment)
I recently got my hands on a nokia 770, and am completely horrified at how underdocumented it is.
Do nokia not want people to add sofware to these things? I eventually found the application manager, and updated the repository to find all of seven things in it. So much for debian linux repository options. Okay, it's not ubuntu, but I thought there might be more than 7 apps available (4 of them thmes. Great.)
Also, I tried to hook it up to my windows mobile phone. No joy. Quick research shows microsoft removed DUN from windows mobile, and the tablet doesn't support anything else.

So, I'm rather peeved at Nokia for not supporting the newer internet connection option of PAN, and I'm mad as hell at MS for removing DUN and GPS functionality from the phone with this update, and madder at Cingular for letting them.
Upshot of this update: The things I used my phone for no longer work (apart from being a phone). Clearly I'm going to have to try to get it to regress to the previous version somehow.

What would be a cool short-term goal:
Full USB master support! USB Keyboards + network and (via a powered USB hub) mobile hard disks. This works on my Zaurus C1000, the hardware on the N800 should support it!
What would be a cool mid-term goal:
Full OpenGL ES acceleration through the OMAP's 3D functionality. Possible problem there is that the output does not go to the full resolution of 800x600 (upscale it in hardware?)
What would be a cool long-term goal: OMAP3430 (version 3 of the OMAP with cortex a8 with accelerators) processor! This one does have hardware supporting a screen as large as 800x600 and even larger! If you cant get 3d acceleration working on N800 because of the resolution of the OMAP and the screen do not work together nicely, a successor with this chip would definitely be the solution! And it is much faster. Try to use the functionality of the video decoders on that chip as well and blammo, you have eliminated all the weaknesses of the N800!

I've been going back and forth on purchasing the N800. It's a great travel device that doesn't require all the hassles of getting heavy laptop through airport security. However, playing movies on long flights is a *must* and most of what I have read says it doesn't do a passable job at this. Are there plans to upgrade this capability in the next model?
