Nokia N800 Challence by Pop Sci
We had a Pop Sci party yesterday at the Nokia Flagship store at Manhattan.

We launched the Nokia N800 challenge. The idea is this:
You come up with the most compelling application, service, script, hardware addition or anything that you will use on the Nokia N800. You send your idea to the challenge as explained here. Your entry must be creative, useful, appealing, fun, versatile, or extremely innovative — something that truly impacts people's lives.
The entries will be judged by members of Nokia staff and the editors of Popular Science. They will select two of the best Nokia N800 innovations. The first winner will be featured in the May issue of the magazine and the second winner will be featured in the June issue. Each winner will show off his or her winning idea in the Popular Science magazine.

Your idea must not be necessarily an application running within the N800. It can be server or network based, and idea of controlling or monitoring something using the inbuilt apps on N800 etc. To my mind, the most important aspect of a good idea is that it utilizes the unique features of the N800 -- portability, good screen, connectivity, openness, and so forth.
So let's be creative out there.

A contest restricted to US residents ? That's not nice...
Why ?
I've wanted to add an entry that would really change people life (as long as gravitionnal waves could change people life, of course...)
What the hell? Where is the 770 PopSci Challenge? How dare you ignore the 770 - the 770 is soooo dead! I'm never buying Nokia again. Or PopSci for that matter.
Only kidding - you know you're going to get a "770 is dead" comment in every blog, though I'd be the first!
Keep up the good work with the N800, and here's to the future.
Not sure I get this. If I have a great idea, I would love to share it with you. If you guys like it, I would love for you to implement it (and then I would sort of appreciate a freebie or something of the next generation (N880/n900 whatever)..
But instead you reward me with "an editorial mention" in magazine... something which does not interest me at ALL, and actually is rather a negative thing to me...
Lets put it this way, if I get a great idea, I will mail you rather than run the risk of winning a prize which annoys me ;)

So is this why the n800 still lacks any useful camera app? Just waiting for someone to volunteer? Too bad you've alienated much of the community, or someone might have done so by now!
I just got the latest maemo statistics. The developer activity has significantly increased after the launch of n800. There are far more developers, projects, and activity @ maemo.org than ever before. This is very good .... :-)
Is it necessary to restrict this contest to american residents only? What's wrong with you Nokia?
Ok, I'm out of the contest, being french.
I'll give you 2 ideas, one which would be useful for real-work application like hospitals, the other which would be an open door to great fun!
1) make a software to read barcodes with the cam, or even better, attach or integrate an RFID reader in n900. From that you get access to a whole new range of applications (not fun, but sure interesting stuff).
2)use wifi connections and "bonjour" network to be able to contact other N800 owner where you are, like nintendo has in its DS (multi-user wifi game features).
you could then organize a lan n800-only party! I see a great potential on this, make it possible to have a place, say a restaurant, where people can chat with other people on other tables. N800 assisted speed-dating, or many many other sutpid but really fun possibilities.
Regards,
Dany
PS : if you like the idea, feel free to offer me a nokia N800 ;-), or just tell me what you think of them
I took a few shots at the NYC Launch party, you can find them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nycjournal/sets/72157594534903970/
Guys, this is a Popular Science contest and it is a US publication. I bet Nokia cannot make Popular Science international ...
I would like to participate at the N800 PopSci Challenge but I am not a legal US resident… Is there any other N800 competition intended by Nokia for the rest (95%) of human population?
Last Anonymous, are you saying you are an illegal US resident then? ;-) :-P

The whole world is going SKYPE.
And we are stuck with Google Talk.
PLEASE PLEASE Enable Skype on the n800!!!
Thank you.

What about innovative ideas from Europe or other nonUS places?
According to the post only citizens from US are invited to participate. Please correct me if I'm wrong Internet is global you know :-)
This is a very good page, you can visit too: Head Shop, Herbal Grinders ,
Bongs, Glass Pipe. Visit us for more info at: http://www.headshopinternational.com/
Enable please wipeer in n800 or other app for ad-hoc p2p.
I'm a lecturer/researcher, the n800 looks almost perfect for a presentation tool, avoiding carting a laptop to presentations/conferences: n800 & usb-vga converter & sisusb means a nice portable package. But no usb power? Is this going to be considered in future, or will I have to add a usb PS to the package?
Checkout what the Acorn/RiscOS community were doing with arm chips some 10years ago.. even layered CAD progs. N800 on order and Oh can someone knock up genealogy prog please
While the contest may not be active anymore and - being European - couldn't participate, I'd like to announce my urgent need for professional quality PIM software for my N800.
I would even buy a commercial licence - it would not even need to be open source.
The platform is simply brilliant - I enjoy using my N800 - but a calendar with task and contact management would make this “nice-to-surf” tool even better. And sync with vCalendar or MS Outlook would be of essence.
There are, of course, the business phones competing for the customers so it may not be Nokia providing PIM softwaree to N800, but there are lots of developers out there. .. and here's one potential customer! I'll bet there are many others, too.
Nokia plays a very large role in the economy of Finland, selling more phones than any other phone manufacturer in the world. Nokia is by far the largest Finnish company, sportsbook, accounting for about a third of the market capitalization of the Helsinki Stock Exchange (OMX Helsinki); a unique situation for an industrialized country. http://www.enterbet.com
