770 feedback

Howdy,

Just a short one this time.

We've been receiving a lot of valuable feedback on our 770 hardware from you. Based on it we decided to continue fixing bugs on 770 and release new software for it. This work will happen on our "hacker version" branch. We'll do our best to make it usable for you.

See Quim's post on the subject.

More later ....

Mhm... Could it be that I was all wrong with my whining and that Nokia is really trying hard to get things right? Seems you guys are at least concerned about what the community thinks and you do communicate very open about what's going to happen, why things are not going to happen etc.

This is unusual with companies the size of Nokia; very unusual. See me mesmerized...

I love the Hacker Edition OS 2007. I get a lot more use out of my Nokia 770 with the new OS. I especially like how it will automatically connect to networks while in standby! Now when I need to 'look something up' on the internet, its right there. One thing though, let's think of this as an 'internet tablet'. I would suggest a change. If the 770 (or 800) is in standby, and is not currently connected to a network, upon 'waking up' the tablet, it should immediately ask you which (if any) network you'd like to connect to. You should be able to single click connect, so instead of picking from the list then clicking 'connect' then 'do not add' you just click an icon next to the network which will 'connect' or another icon which will 'connect and add'.

It sounds like good news, but if previous experiences have learned us anything, it is that words from Nokia re the 770 need to be read very, very carefully, because they sometimes appear to say something that isn't really in them.

I seem to remember an announcement that alluded continued support for the 770 and its operating system, merely weeks before aforementioned support was axed. Now it appears that support is back on, but let's wait and see; I don't believe Nokia can be trusted on words alone anymore...

The message has always been
-Nokia supports the product (warranty etc)
-No OS 2007 for 770

This has always been their story. Also, after N800 launch Nokia already has released one sw upgrade for OS 2006 and a hacker edition.

Now they said they'll continue working on the hacker edition.

But anyway, I'm still waiting for Intel to kick their ass!

I keep trying to tell the tablet folks: Nokia employees are good people. They really do want to do the right thing. If they don't, you can bet there's some behind-the-scenes corporate crap hamstringing them.

The moral is: please stop shooting the messengers. The anger is best directed at the executive bureaucrats.

Anyway, nice work, Doc!

That's really interesting and I hope it will help keeping customers' loyalty towards this kind of open-source products.

Nokia says 770 is a pretty nice piece of equipment, even with bugs- if you like 770. If OS2006 is close to working, why not solve 5 bugs, release an official update. Should not be too complicated. A hacker version- which it actually is not- is something that scares some users, who rely on official, "no void of warranty"-versions. Some users actually are afraid of bricking their 770 with a hacker version.
For me hacker version is ok and I'm looking forward to it

Planning to fix bugs in the "unsupported hacker edition" that users are warned to "use at your own risk" seems far too little too late imho, and only time will tell if even this token effort produces anything at all... I wouldn't hold my breath. Ari still hasn't acknowledged that he mislead people about ITOS2006 support.

Really good news... some suggestions.

Like the cleanest source of energy is energy saving, also the memory of the 770 can be grown by making as much software as possible optional. Everything -- the browser, RSS, Notes, the mailer, ... should be user-uninstallable. Provide only a core as a flashable image.

Personally I don't mind the "unsupported" label... my Linux desktop consists 99% of such stuff. Just read the GPL warranty text ;-)

But for this device it is a little different in the sense that there are significant closed-source components involved. So please do work with the community to create a core set of add-on open source software -- a "distribution", if you like -- that has been verified not to step on those hidden toes...

Another idea: run remote apps where you can. I already do this, being lucky enough to have access to University servers. Setting up a home machine for this is not quite trivial, so you may want to consider offering net services to make this easier. I actually use my office desktop from our summer home over vnc... great application. For mail I use mutt-over-ssh though... unless there are attachments to be opened ;-)

I live in Colombia, South America and just a week ago I was introduced to this amazing tool. Now I have a 770 and I'd love to develop a project here with my university students. For my country, this is a wonderful app, versatile and accessible.

Is there any way to contact Mr. Jaaksi more directly to see if this idea is possible?

Ari, how about allocating the 770 Hacker Edition Project also some working resources. I just read Quim Gil's comments from the end of http://desdeamericaconamor.org/blog/node/356
and to me it does look like nobody has not developed the Hacker Edition for a long time and who knows if ever will.

What a nice way to kill a project - just do not to allocate any resources to it.

So let me get this right... I just bought a 770 under the guise that it was just an old version of the 800 with lesser hardware, design and limited MMC slot. Now I learn that it is a lost cause, no longer to be supported by Nokia, AND I can't return it but am expected to let the manufacturer make it right (according to buy.com). No offense, but what a load of bullsh*t. Nowhere in the product description does it mentioned you're buying an EOL'd product that will only be supported unofficially, thus making the one year warranty virtually useless because it's voided the minute you load the hacker edition on there. I'd expect something like that from tapwave, but not a major company like Nokia. Don't understand how they (buy.com)can put that no return/refund disclaimer on the info page but not mention anything about it being an obsolete product (relatively speaking of course).

And I thought Palm had issues releasing phones with known hardware issues and no inclination to fix them until customers in the know revolted many months down the road.

Why can't they just do a flash upgrade to the 07 OS. Are the hardware differences between the 770 and 800 that different that they require two different OS's?

Many people have just bought these, either from woot or buy-dot-com. Please continue with support. You might be surprised what this gesture might mean for future sales. One thing is for certain: if the devices are not supported, Nokia will have generated negative sentiment. Looks like 8,000 people bought a 770 recently at woot. Will they be ambassadors for Nokia tablets or detractors? Why punish early adopters of your technology? Is this part of the Nokia culture?

I’d like to make a suggestion and explain why I think that it is worthwhile:

I suggest that you bring about the creation of a downloadable .ISO image of a Live CD or perhaps a Live DVD that contains all of the software necessary to develop software for the last released version of IT OS 2006 for the 770. Why? There are several reasons. The core OS which you could use now to create the disc image will change in time and might be difficult for a future potential developer to locate. There might be issues using the last IT OS 2006 development tools with future versions of the desktop OS. Also, as the focus moves on to newer versions of the IT OS, it may be more difficult to sort out which version of what is the right one to use when building for the 770.

I believe that you may even be able to drastically reduce the cost to Nokia of developing the Live CD/DVD by having someone at Nokia just act as a project supervisor instead of having them tasked with the single-handed creation of the disc. They could write a specification that would describe what is to be on the Live CD/DVD and how it should be organized.

Make use of the many people who freely give their time and talents within the open source community. You could post a message on your blog seeking volunteers, or perhaps look through the list of developers who would be pre-qualified by having earned discount codes when the 770 was released and ask them to volunteer their time to create a Live CD (or Live DVD) disc that would be “frozen in time.” It would enable anyone now or in the future, to boot up with it and use it to develop software for the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet OS 2006 (final build) without needing anything else. The Nokia staff member serving as project manager would guide group to create the Live CD/DVD. Once completed, Nokia could release an .ISO disc image that would be made available to various hosting sites.

It would be nice if the Live CD/DVD also had an installer so that the user would have the option of installing the whole system on a PC if they wanted to do so. Then it could be used either way, as a “Live” disc, or as an installation disc. Think of it as a development time capsule, neatly organized, and shielding the user from code and notes lost through the ravages of time. It would also make a very nice and positive thing to announce to the 770 community. IT OS 2006 forever!

Best wishes,
Jack Swindell

Just picked up an inexpensive n770. Great device at that price I will not complain and will buy an 880 or whatever the next device is. Here are a few features I think that need to be cleaned up (and wouldn't be hard).

1. Browser - with Mozilla or khtml engine (in the works). Will give better web app support.
2. Easier data entry (blackberry like keyboard?) But maybe this is just a learning curve. Anyway I bought a bluetooth keyboard and will lug it around.
3. Better offline data/data caching. My issue is that cell data plans are expensive ($50-100 per month) and wifi isn't everywhere.) This is the selling feature of the iphone - the $20-30 data plan.
4. Better pdf support - fbreader works well but the pdf support is limited.
5. Include the extra repositories by default to make software install easier
6. Better pim - yahoo + google support?
7. No ogg support out of the box? What about open?

Ideas for monitization:
a) Nice dictionary - with chinese char recognition (traditional, simplified, kanji). Everyone in Asia seems to have an electric dictionary - this is what sharp did with their device.
b) Voice recogition/translation (this could be a server based and paid)
c) Sell links to services (online poker etc) to vendors. The way firefox does.
d) Games etc - old classic games - these could also be links to flash based apps
