Qt goes LGPL
Qt will be available under LGPL and repositories will be publicly available. We invite contributions ... so the development process will open up too.
This will make Qt a very interesting platform. It is now truly open, cross platform, and technically very advanced.
Many people had already earlier an opinion that Qt is technically very advanced, flexible and powerful. It was only the licensing and the development model that was wrong. Now, that’s fixed.

I really like Qt libs, but I don't think making them LGPL can be positive for opensource. Why? Because this will allow closed source application to be free to embed them, without paying anything.
My 2 cents.
Andrea!

LGPL strictly forbids 'embedding' of LGPL software in a non-free application.
This is quite exciting. I've never delved into Qt's technology because of the licensing barrier. I'll be downloading and playing with it this weekend.
What we need now, though, is a wealth of documentation and libs. GTK is extremely easy to follow because there are great reference materials, tutorials, and code snippets. There are layers that bring GTK into many different languages. Now that Qt is free, that's the gap that needs to be closed.
Have you taken a look at Qt documentation? It's better than Gtk.
As a user, I don't like Qt a lot. I never saw a Qt application that looks and feels good. But of course I know thats personal only and other people think just like that about Gtk.
I tried to make my rejection of Qt appear more reasonable by saying I don't like its development model. Happy to see you changed just that. It shows Nokia is serious about being open.
Now the only thing that spoils the party ist the license. LGPL? Really? That's not a good decision. You could have kept using it for your own proprietary stuff under the commercial license or a private one- after all, it's your product anyway ;). But I don't see why Nokia should encourage third parties to develop proprietary code using Qt.
You only need to look at those celebrating now. Not good. Not good at all. :(
Dear complainers: Have you looked how GTK+ and GNOME are licensed? LGPL.
In other words: at long last, now Qt has licensing parity with GTK+.
This is fantastic news! Thank you Ari, especially if you had a hand in making this happen. Great news for Linux and Nokia too. I can't wait to see Qt used seriously on S60 and Maemo.
@madkangas:
I hear this a lot now: "Why complain, Gtk is LGPL, too." - How does this matter? Only because your neighbour doesn't brush his teeth, will you stop doing so, too?
However, as you say it's "fantastic" news: Could you try to explain why? I've asked this a few times now and never got an answer.
Bait and Switch
Note that the LGPL move only applies to Qt and not the embedded version of Qt.
So this is basically non-news. Linux distros have only included GPL licensed Qt apps which they will likely continue to do.
Consumer devices like phones and/or media players will continue to be locked down and bound by the proprietary license.
Note also that previous versions of Qt (read: less bloated) are NOT going to move to LGPL.
My advice: switch to GTK and avoid being bound by the apparent whims of whoever owns Qt.
There is a lot of competition in outsourcing software development, as there are many firms across the globe catering to clients looking for outsourcing their work. What is good is that the takers can choose the best from the lot. http://www.infysolutions.com.

Now, what else to predict?
Well.. a few things. But before that..
As loyal to Finnish business attitude, I bought my latest Nokia phone. It was delivered to me in a shield box from the
manufacturer. When I opened at home, and set up the battery, and then switched it on. The phone was switching on, but after 2 seconds was going back off. I left it hours on its battery charger, but not improvements.
I took it back to the shop. The person
there, opened a new shield box and tried the my battery on another phone. The other phone stayed on with my battery. That proved that my battery was OK, and that the phone had a problem. The person at the shop gave me the other phone that worked. After a few days I noticed that keypad back-light comes and goes from time to time. Simply very very disappointed about the quality. Two Nokia same type of phones that were sold from a high-street shop were faulty!
I think you need to regain the quality levels, otherwise OSS cannot help much!
Now back to OSS, I think, Trolltech was acquired just for political reasons. There is no any great technology from Qt. Sorry to say that!
Qt, and GTK+ will reach their end of their product development life cycle in 2-4 years time. They will bypassed by AJAX, JQuery and other seamless technologies. We need that asap and develop CrossDesktop and CrossSilicon apps.
UI, it is still of a problem, but we can do more..
Thanks
AJAX is okay for mail and google maps but it will never replace a local application. Just not fast enough and internet connections are too likely to go down. Not to mention no one likes other people having their data. I think it is awesome that qt is being released, but dangit why did I find out AFTER I just bought "foundations of gtk+ development" heh.
nice post
