Houston, we have a take-off!
We gave a few hundred Nokia N900s out to the Maemo Summit participants. That happened about a month ago. You have now been using the devices and provided us with feedback. Thank you so much! That has been very helpful. You've helped us to focus our effort and work on the remaining issues. That's why I want YOU to be the first to know.
We have also been testing the software extensivly in our own labs. We will continue working on the software and will provide important software upgrades as we go forward. But we also wanted to have very good software release to start with.
Based on our testing and your feedback we decided to postpone the delivery start. We had oroiginally said October, but now we said November. Now I'm happy to tell that we ment only days, not weeks or months.
The shipments of the Nokia N900 have now started. The factories are now working full speed and the devices are on their way to distribution.

Congratulations!
So looks like I'll just miss being able to pick my N900 up in person from my friends in LA (no sign of N900 for Australia yet) on Friday their time! Patience is a virtue... ;-)
And when can people who ordered them directly from Nokia expect a delivery? Within days or weeks?
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! GREAT WORK, GREAT TEAM, GREAT DEVICE, GREAT SOFTWARE !!! Thanks Peter, Jussi and Ari! :)))
Congratulations!
And thanks for the great work! I can't wait to get my hands on the device. :-)
Can't wait to get my paws on this. Thanks for confirming it. Of course, it mway be a while before it reaches those of us who ordered from retailers. But at least we know it's happening. :)
Congratulations!
I hope regular people will appreciate the N900 and sales will go well.
Wowowow !! Thank you so much!!!!!!
Where can we track the maemo5 roadmap now that's the current stable os? updates schedules, etc?
A pity that for now, it is difficult to get one - as a NSN person
Well, it looks like you have used this month to fix some important bugs before final shipping... that's cool, but... where can we find an updated firmware too :) ???

We helped you with feedback, now help us with new firmware!! :)
Thanks :p
Congratulations!
Now hope for success, I think N900 is the best phone I have had in my life so far.

I'm going to be in NYC this Saturday and am praying it will be at the Nokia flagship by then so I can pick it up in person!
Congratulations, Ari (and crew)!
congratulations and thanks. looking forward to my friends finally getting their hands on the n900 as well :)
Great news!
I am replacing my G1 google phone (which I have had for 1 year now) with an N900.
I strongly recommend adding video skype ASAP, this will be another "killer feature" that would put Nokia further ahead. Also consider OVI to sync with google contacts to ;-)
Now I am waiting for expansys to deliver ;-)
That is wonderful news! Do you have any idea when the USA customers should expect shipment?
Please let the title have a double meaning and indicate that the first shipment of N900's is coming to Houston, TX!!!
From,
Proud Houston resident.
PS. Great job, I'm glad the delay didn't overcome the initial enthusiasm.
Fantastic! Thanks for all of y'alls hard work! I look forward to working with it.
Congratulations!
When will we have it in Turkey? Do you have any idea on that?
Congratulations to all hard working guys from Maemo team. You made history. I hope you get some well deserved holiday now.
Acording to Klas Ström on nokia sweden the n900 will be delayed because the current software doesnt work with the simcards from the company 3. Why do they delay it just because of a software issue that wont effect the consumers that dont have 3?
Does following site work on the N900?
http://www.yonkis.com/mediaflash/1000000.swf
Thank you!! :-)
rok
Congrats! Looking forward to the OS updates, and of course, RX-71 and beyond ;)
thanks, looking forward to the phone!
Good Times Ari, Good Times!
Hi Ari,
I don't know if you are aware of this, but Nokia Sweden is planing to delay the release another three weeks, and wait for the new firmware. They say that is because it wont work the operator 3, which is already known; but no other countries are taking such absurd decisions and making everybody else wait just to satisfy some customers from the operator 3.
I hope that you can do something about this. The man came out with that statement is called Klas, and here is his information:
Klas Ström, Produktchef Nokia Skandinavien
Mobil: 0709 93 83 47
E-post: klas.strom@nokia.com
Please help, its stupid to wait almost a month for some fix that i dont need. i dont use 3, and many others dont.
Will it work with Spotify? I know that the Spotify guys are working on a release for s60.
great news - looking forward to playing with it
Yep Liftoff. Nokia announce shipping and every 3rd party seller is forced to put their ship date back two weeks. I wouldnt exactly call that liftoff, more of an aborted launch
Thanks for you great work! You finally did it. Wait, no, WE finally did it, 'coz I'm a Maemo community member and took some efforts as well to try to make Maemo better :).
Anyway, good job. I'm waiting when I will be able to purchase n900 in my area and good luck in sales. While n900 is not perfect in freedoms, that's still best opensource solution around. And good proof that opensource could change the world. Living in interesting times! And thank you for making this possible.
Is there any reason why all my contact attempts with you, Mr. Makkinen and other Maemo people at Nokia are being ignored? Few weeks ago I published (one of the most extensive up to date I think) preview of the N900 based on a prototype unit. As the review got extremely popular with over 350.000 impressions now (increasing by ~2000 everyday) and very positive comments about its quality, I thought it'd be good to update it as fast as possible based on a commercial unit so that the information all those tens of thousands of people read is as accurate and up-to-date as possible, not to even mention being able to answer hundreds (if not thousands) of detailed questions about the device and its funtionality people post on our discussion forums. Is there something wrong with the preview, the website, or myself in the eyes of Nokia that causes I do not deserve even getting a short answer to my emails? Wouldn't it be a real shame to kill my enthusiasm and excitement about the device and my eagerness to provide the N900 with such a massive promotion, including a dedicated new My-Maemo.com site which is ready and just waiting to be launched? Excuse me for posting it this way, but what else am I supposed to do if all I get in exchange for my emails is delivery confirmations? I just can't stop wondering why a website with up to 50.000 visitors a day that wants to promote and support the N900 is being RULED OUT that way... I thought that new device like the N900 based on new (to majority of smartphone users) platform like Maemo NEEDS every possible promotion to break the iPhone hype, but apparently I am wrong... Please, do not discourage the most devoted enthusiasts of your products - it's such a waste of possibilities! Of course, I will obediently accept your decision not to let me support your product on my websites, but is letting me know the reasons too much to ask? Thanks in advance and kindest regards.
@Michal Jerz / My-Symbian.com
Nokia has done an excellent job with ignoring their customers, but i must say that im surprised that they even ignore supporters as you Michal.
I have personally read your review and I see that you have put a lots of time and efforts into it. It was indeed because of your review that i decided to pre-order the N900.
I now deeply regret that decision. I am a software engineer, and I was planing to develop for the Maemo community, but now after being treated that way, im not going to waste my time for a company who treats their loyal customers, developers and supports in such way.
I don't think you should either Michal, but of course its your decision.
@Michal Jerz: I imagine, especially with the delays where software was being changed, that Ari Jaaksi and others has been very busy. In my experience it's just not possible to sprint in the final stages of a major product release _and_ respond to mails from fans. I imagine they have large inboxes of unread mails by this point.
When can we expect N900 in Austria ?
We´ll see monday and tuesday whether this was a "Houston, we have a lift-off" moment or a "Launch countdown is suspended and launch is aborted" moment.
If we see reports from customers reporting getting invoices and UPS/Fedex tracking numbers in their inboxes, and money disappearing off accounts then it is a "take-off".
If next week keeps being silent then the launch from factory-to-market was not great.
It is hollow, and deceitful, marketing to say "we´re shipping" and then let everything go silent for a few weeks.
@Michal Jerz
Your review was the best one I´ve read to date.
@Michal Jerz,
These Nokia Maemo guys ignore people because they think they are 'some kinda half-assed astronauts!!'
Have you seen the blog title? 'Huston we have lift off'!!
Ari, you are only talking about a mobile phone me old son not some kinda Nasa Mars landing!!
Michal,
I got your email last week and we're already working on it. I was traveling the whole week so I could not follow it up properly -- sorry for the delay.
Thanks for the good work!!!
--Ari
Interesting post you got here. I'd like to read a bit more concerning that theme.
BTW look at the design I've made myself London escorts
When wil it land in the Shops ?
Houston is not that far from the Netherlands is it ?
I can't wait to have N900 for myself.. :) I hope my local electronics supplier gets he's act together. :)
After that I might need to make some of my own software... It's been a while...
Ari do you know when Nokia N900 hits asia market? i need this phone bad before december :(
Mission control this is N900.
"So um we going here or not?"
N900 this is mission control
"Yes, I mean no, I mean maybe, I mean we have started the countdown but we still have no actual idea when you will be taking off"
Mission control this is N900
"SNAFU"
Ok Ari,
The phone looks great and I look forward to using it (if it ever comes out of your warehouses).
But it seems Nokia is screwing up the release of this device.
November 11th Nokia officially says "We´re starting to ship" and you say "we have take off" (which it is a slow take-off of a overloaded plane who can barely make the runway, not the rocket lift-off normally associated with Houston mission control)
Now these Nokia entities are all reporting the device maybe at the end of the month, maybe december, maybe next year?
- Nokia Germany
- Nokia USA
- Nokia UK
- Nokia Sweden
- Nokia Denmark
- Nokia Norway
Not really looking like a stellar lift-off is it?
I congratulate you on getting this into manufacturing (it seems like it´s there) and on all the buzz you guys have created.
Michale Jerzu!!!

I checked my order on Amazon.com. Nokia N900 will arrive after December 25! "The following item will arrive after December 25, 2009." First, they said October! Then November! Then after December 25!! What a marketing strategy is that?
Great job on getting the product ready.
I do assume that this is being flown out of Korea and to distributors?
Nobody in the logistics chain is trying to be too-smart and sending this by boat?
as you can see, the N900 is on the way. No need to be impatience.

This is starting to look like a failure. Not a shipping success.
More and more shops are reporting late december for estimated stock arrival. Heck even Dell the US partner of Nokia is reporting December 23rd for their preorders.
You guys had a press release saying it had arrived in the US, yet no distributor has it here.
Whats going on? Even your own Nokia USA stores have no idea...I am pretty confused.
First it was shipping from Korea to here, NOW you guys are announcing it has landed?
i.e. is it on the way to stores or what?
You are pretty confusing, I would appreciate if you clear this up. I understand you guys are under intense pressure, and worked hard I am not venting at you guys but rather at the people in charge of the logistics part of this.
Give us an idea of when it will be IN STORES, i.e when will Nokia USA receive it?
Just giving you some feedback..do not expect a response with a definitive data but if you could inform us all honestly with a date that is accurate you will find the frustration missing :)
Ari i need to know when nokia want to release n900 to asia. i've been waiting long enough and cannot wait anymore :(

I love my N800s. I'd love an N900. But, I live in the USA. N900 won't sell here, except in major cities. Here's why: http://tinyurl.com/3gUSAmap N900 has no 3G coverage over MOST of America where CDMA/EVDO is, and will be for a long time, king. Millions of customers, just like me, can only wait and hope Ari and Nokia notices us waving our dollars towards Finland....please?
Nexus One will market CDMA/EVDO Spring 2010...it's that important!
Until then N900 is as useless as the 3G GSM systems that support it.
Many thanks to the Maemo/Nokia developers for our great Linux tablets!
Maemo N1000:
- Size: 120 x 70 x 13 mm = 109 cm3
- Display: 4.5 inches, 98 x 57 mm, aspect ratio 16:9
- Wi-Fi
- No physical keyboard to prevent competition with N900
- Multi-touch to get the right font size for different people and different environments
Nice article you got here. It would be great to read more about this theme. Thank you for sharing that data.

The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.
