MeeGo time!

We’ve been busy with our friends @ Intel.

We decided to expand the relationship we started already last spring. We merge Maemo and Moblin projects into one single project called MeeGo. MeeGo is an open software platform – an operating system – for a wide range of devices. It’ll run on X86 and on Arm based hardware. It will be developed as an open project hosted by the Linux Foundation.

So what does it mean? Many things.

Joint development

We will merge Maemo and Moblin projects. Their architecture is already very similar. They share many components but sometimes use different versions. But they build and integrate releases independently. And while Maemo is for ARM, Moblin is for X86. Now we merge them to get the best of both. A good Moblin build and integration, Maemo’s mobile optimizations and ARM support, Qt etc. We can also now make the bright engineers of Intel and Nokia to work close together.

And even more. I invite all active Moblin and Maemo community members to now join the MeeGo project. It’ll give you all a much bigger pond to swim in. And it’ll get your work into much wider use than either of these projects separately.

Freedom

MeeGo is free. Code will be available for everybody under proper open source licenses. No strings attached other than making your contributions also free. The development and integration will be open, too. Everybody can invest in MeeGo and participate. It is a genuine open source project. Free for everybody to participate, contribute, and enjoy. Free. No papers to sign. Just show up!

Compatibility

MeeGo offers the broadest possible compatibility for application developers. It uses Qt as the framework and toolset for application developers. It means very good tools and possibility to run your apps in a wide range of devices. Code once – deploy everywhere.

MeeGo also means compatibility and full compliance with leading open source projects. We will not fork projects if we can possibly avoid it. We will work with leading open source projects using the open source best practices.

A perfect target

MeeGo will aim high. Nokia and Intel are the biggest investors in mobile Linux based technologies and now – together—even more significant. We will put all our force behind making MeeGo THE operating system.

So, for chip-set companies, hardware vendors, software companies, application developers, device manufactures, operators … this is the place to go. Make you stuff work under, inside, or on top of MeeGo and you get your stuff deployed all over the place. Nokia will ship tons of MeeGo devices, Intel, too. And others will use MeeGo in their devices. It is open, free, powerful and compatible.

Devices

So what’s with Maemo6? Maemo6 will be MeeGo compatible.....consider Maemo6 already a MeeGo instance.

So aim at MeeGo. We will!

Would you also talk a little bit about where the money comes in? It's good to have another open platform, but developers need money to finance developments. If you really want outstanding developed software, you need to tunnel the money to them. "The spice must flow" if you know what i mean :)

I like that the power of both Intel and Nokia are going to be behind this but don't they currently address different market sectors. How is MeeGo going to look from a car satnav to the next Nokia internet tablet/phone?

My biggest concern is that this convergence is perhaps a step too far -- having no real specific knowledge of how this integration is going to work -- and that far from a specialisation and optimisation it is a step in reverse.

Tamoghno: It probably means you'll have source compatibility between the platforms. This means that someone like myself were to produce a game for X86 Linux/Moblin (basically the same thing, really...) it should be easier for me to build and bundle up the ARM version of the same thing for the N900 and ARM Smartbook customers as well. We'll just have to see if they do accomplish something that we can do that with. It'd make MeeGo somewhat compelling at that point.

2/15/2010 7:28 AM
Blogger SVartalf said...

RPM versus DEB...

This is merely the packaging for delivery. It's very interchangeable and doesn't preclude one over the other prior to deployment actually. OpenEmbedded (and therefor Angstrom and a whole host of others...) can use either within a build image by simply overriding a config environment variable within the local.conf file.

If MeeGo uses the same sort of thinking, it isn't going to be packaging specific. (which is what they should probably work at being...)

I would be seriously annoyed if we were and although the number of N900 owners may not be that big they tend to be the "geeky" type that friends consult when buying a new phone so their influence goes beyond their numbers. I definitely know what to recommend my friends should the N900 community be left out in the cold.

I really don't get the fuzz about N900/N8x0. They are other products, and products have their target software that is supported. This is how things are and have been for years. It is the same as buying a s60 phone (ie: n95) and saying you want the new MeeGo images, makes no sense!

Instead of complaining, people should take the opportunity that these N8x0 and N900 devices provide us: you can freely reflash with any software you want. So stop bitching and do something.

That's the problem, someone gives you the right to flash everything to your device and suddenly people start complaining that they don't provide XYZ feature to be flashed.

Let's try to be more reasonable. Get the free code and make it run where you want, or stop bitching and buy a new device. After all Nokia and Intel get money from selling products (hw) and not software.

Well, this kind of feels like Nokia is throwing away all the work they (and the community) have done since 2005. Fully open sounds awesome, but RPM instead of deb/apt sounds awful. I was really excited at the possibility of Maemo 6 becoming a mainstream/user-friendly Debian-based OS.

RIP Maemo, it's been fun. I guess I'll have to wait and see if MeeGo is worth using.

Symbian? Maemo? MeeGo? Mr. Nokia, what will be the next?

This means N900 is already dead. It has been in the shops only few weeks and it has no future already.

Probably Meego is not going to run on N900 as we can reasonably assume it will require more cpu power as it is for most OSs.

Who is going to develop applications for Maemo 5 if MeeGo will be here in 6 months? Apple store has more than 150000 (150 thousands!!!) applications and Mr. Nokia forces the developers to start all over again.

Ah, one more thing. Thank you for not supporting navigation with voice in all phones but N900. It seems it will never be supported.

This is the last Nokia phone I buy. I am out.

I see the logic behind merging the underlying platform, especially adopting a common name to give developers confidence.

I don't see why you've opted for an RPM based distribution system however. RPM is a vastly inferior package management tool, see http://lwn.net/Articles/223183/ or http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/maemo/developers/58722

Intel and Nokia should publish the reasoning prompting their rpm vs. deb decision.

Gustavo said: I really don't get the fuzz about N900/N8x0. They are other products, and products have their target software that is supported.

See, some of us can't afford to buy a new $650 phone every 6-12 months. Planned obsolescence is obscene, and hurts not only consumers and the environment, but also Nokia's reputation. Obviously Nokia can't make their latest software run on all their legacy hardware, but they claim to be making "computers" now. When you buy an expensive computer with a just-released OS, it's really not unreasonable to expect at least a year or two of software updates. On the other hand, telling your customers that they either have to buy new hardware every six months, or volunteer their time to do your job for you -- that would be unreasonable.

2/15/2010 4:20 PM
Blogger Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri said...

Nobody is requiring you to buy the last device, you can use yours for years if you wish. What you don't get is the latest software. And since you compared with "computers", which I disagree, I can still find an analogy there as well, people create new games that require you to buy new video cards at least -- and often they are more than 650 USD :-)

On the other hand, if you are active Maemo community developer, it is very likely that you'll get a device for free or loan. We can't blame Nokia there, they paid the trip of speakers, paid food and beer for everyone interested and distributed over 300 n900! And I'm not even accounting Forum Nokia Champion program that you can use to get devices as well.

Having those two big companies working together in a clean open source way could only mean two things:

/they really want to do something to fight against droid and others.

/they just stop their effort by washing their hands as cleanly as possible.

they already are leaders on hardware, menaced by google / apple / (arm), just have to provide more attractive than those to keep their comfortable market place.
why won't they do it?
what will happens if they don't?

And as for n900 owners, what do you understand when you read "consider maemo6 as the first meego instance"?

rpm/deb...does it matter? i mean really.
could it be something so easier like archlinux packages...

that said, there is big work to obtain all promise, time will be ennemy for them now..

2/15/2010 4:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gustavo - The latest games require the latest hardware for a reason -- they would be unplayably slow on older machines. There will be no such justification if Maemo 6/MeeGo doesn't run on the N900. And yes, I am an active Maemo dev, and I have received discounted hardware from Nokia in the past. But I have no interest in making software for a platform that breaks compatibility every 6-12 months for no good reason other than to sell more hardware.

N900 owners are most likely fine.

You can install a almost stock standard debian on it if you like and use it. So nothing will stop meego from being installed on it.

Becides the Linux kernel has alterations upcoming if the old Linux os on the phone does not get them. The old one will need more resources than the new meego.

So resources should not be a issue.

My mind is blown. It never ceases to amaze me how one schmuck in the comments make a massive jump in creative interpretation, and the angry lemming horde follows him off a cliff. (The same madness was evident all over Qt labs when Nokia purchased Trolltech)

Nokia and Intel are unifying their userspace solutions, using Moblins core userspace and Qt etc on the front end.

This does not mean that Nokia is completely changing its road map or scheduled devices. Imagine the next device (n9**) is a slightly improved hardware revision (realistic) with entirely new software (maemo6 going on Meego). These geek early adopters will be stumped by what exactly?

I own an n900, have enjoyed several (significant) updates so far and look forward to 1.2 and beyond.

(And for n8** users who want to draw analogy, that generation hardware has an MBX GPU and the associated drivers were never released into the wild. Maemo5 was not an option without GL)

Dear Mr. Jaaksi.
I am a small company owner (of about 200 employees), and today I was actually about to go and order 60 units of the N900..
..and then, I have stumbled into this post .
What turned out from reading this post (and a small research later) is not so encouraging.
The N900 looks very promising for me , since I can even run our internal own software on it, to support our global structure, but if NOKIA does not want to say anything about the MeeGo on N900, it means (to me ..) that it will just not happen.
It is impossible that no one at Nokia actually knows the answer.
COmpanies plan their product strategies monthes ahead.
you have the answer but you keep it secret , which to my eyes , as a company owner who knows the "PR tricks", means only that it will never happen.
I also wonder why the concerns of your clients dazzle you.
It is obvious that if a new OS will arrive, the old one will be abandoned , or become secondary in importance (at best).
It is true to all products, but mainly to an OPEN SOURCE product...
It is quite obvious that the so-called "community" will prefer to develop for the new OS...
How many software companies do you know that still develop apps for (only) windows NT ? or even XP ??
If Nokia will not officially support the MeeGo on N900, the N900 owners will be left with a pretty much old product with no updates / software in no time ...

Only with the Right people at the Right Place at the Right time , this company can turn around.

As a Nokia ex employee I still love Nokia and the products and I am very disappointed now, at the position of the company.

Nokia lost bunch of good people in the continuous lay offs and all the bad ones still atop.So until they change it , I dont think it can turnaround. It will be for sure "ME GO"

Hi Ari:
Apple or Google did not captured the smart phone market only on Operating systems, but different product configuration and mentality. If Nokia continue with same product mentality as they did in past, then their new operating systems does not buy that much. Nokia also need to improve their branding specifically in US. Have you ever been in a local shops in US, there is less talk about Nokia products. So my advice is that focus on all elements. Meego may be a right direction but not a winning card. I know Nokia has a great resources, please use that to come with nobel products. Ok, Flash is great, how about HTML 5?

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass favor.
