webOS launch in San Francisco!
We announced today 3 new webOS devices that work beautifully together and make webOS shine. We also demonstrated many new innovations that show how great software webOS is for end users and for developers. I want to publicly thank my team and others who have done a tremendous job during the last months and weeks and days and nights. I’m very proud to be a member of this team!We showed a true webOS smart phone, the Veer, no larger than your credit card yet a fully capable smart phone running the latest webOS. We demonstrated a true workhorse, Pre 3, with a beautiful big screen and a qwerty keyboard. At the same time, we launched the HP TouchPad, a large beautiful tablet running the same webOS.
Let’s then think about the products together. Touch and share. Download and study information about the Sharks today’s game on your Touch Pad. Then, touch the pad with your Veer before leaving home – and take the information with you to go. This is pretty close to my old vision – now just much better implemented!
And, with webOS, you can use the small phone to so much more than just talking. Veer is a true full featured smart phone. And for a tablet, I claim the webOS is better than any other OS for that form factor.
There are three aspects that, in my mind, make webOS so great:
- It is designed for cloud. Synergy is a part of the webOS running in the cloud.
- It is standard. Developers can use standard HTML and javascript and unleash the full power of webOS, internet, and their favorite services.
- It is task oriented. The highly scalable UI promotes tasks and activities you want to perform. You can do you task on a small screen or on a big screen – but instead of concentrating on launching apps it concentrates on getting your things done.
But I wanna talk more about these later. Now, let’s party!

So when will Pre (plus) get WebOS2?
Ari, will Pixi Plus get WebOS 2? Very refreshing announcements today from Palm otherwise!
By the way, is Palm brand dead now?
very nicely put
Does the new WebOs Qt?
Wow, is this N800 / OS2007 all over again? A whole new crop of devoted fans who don't realize they bought disposable hardware, and are now surprised to realize they won't be getting the new software?
WebOS fans: Look at Ari's blog archive from 2007, homeboy doesn't give a f*ck about anything you bought prior to today (or whenever these new devices go on sale).
Ari: Congrats on the launch! This looks like a good platform, one that would totally be worth using if it wasn't designed just to support a single vendor's planned-obsolescence "lifecycle".
Hi Ari
This was a great presentation. Really looking forward to getting hold of a Touchpad. Like a friend of mine said if you get a Touchpad you may as well get a Pre so that you get the synergy between them.
I currently have an N900 which I absolutely love. However as you are well aware the baby was thrown out with the bathwater and a great opportunity was missed by Nokia. Unfortunately due to problems with it not synching with my works Exchange 2010 environment I no longer use it as a day to day phone. Instead I have had to revert to a Nokia E5.
This brings me another point. Please Ari get the marketing/development guys to roll out a Landscape qwerty keyboard equipped phone. I hate the cramped portrait style keyboards. I much prefer the form factor of the N900 and Desire Z. Please get them to build some proper Enterprise oriented handsets so that I can go to my boss and recommend that we migrate from Symbian to WebOS.
If you do roll out the landscape qwerty I will be breaking down your door to get one.
Thanks and keep up the good work
hey ari jaaksi,
today as nokia loyalist i'm pretty disappointed by nokia's move to microsoft...
i'm looking forward to webos now...hope you'll do a great job with web os as you did maemo/meego...
Ari web os looks super sweet your doing a great job... but i was kindah wondering if you still had enough strings in nokia to stop the microsoft windows 7 'deal' they are going to kill a great finnish company...
The new that was dropped on us this morning by Nokia and Microsoft gave me a new perspective on webOS.
I can only wonder what a "one OS for multiple devices" like MeeGo could have become if it was not killed. I am enthusiastic to see that this great idea will continue to live through webOS.
That being said, I was disappointed by the hardware.
I'm afraid I don't like that little Recycled Samsung looking handset at all, Ari.
Give me something that resembles the N900 and I'll happily jump on the WebOS bandwagon.
Ari I went to t-mobile usa so I could buy the n900 and now people are telling me the pre3 and veer are at&t frequencies only please tell me that we can all use your wonderful phones
I am not one of the users appreciating nokia's step forwarding towards microsoft.
Great post though it is :)
